MIND THE GAP
Mind The Gap was a competition put on by the Chicago Architectural Club. The prompt was to fill in the hole left by the proposed but unfinished Santiago Calatrava Spire.
The site is situated on the north side of the Chicago River and Lake Shore Drive. It is not only one of the most visible sites in Chicago but also has a very significant history of the city.
Our response was to put a museum within the confines of the existing underground structure. Rising out of the underground portion was a sculptural
Section through the sculpture and the building, eluding to the path light can take below grade.
In order for the site to be successful, the noise from Lake Shore Drive (LSD) needs to be mitigated. A decorative and mirrored screen wall has been placed along the eastern edge of the site to accomplish this task.
